FAQs

My septic system only has a strait pipe running out of the tank and over a bank but it has been there for 45 years. Is it covered by the grandfather clause?

No, there is no grandfather clause. The lot owner is required to ensure the proper functioning and maintenance of their system and releasing untreated or partially treated sewage is prohibited in Nova Scotia.

Can I construct my own pit privy (out house)?

As of May 1st, 2016 a person is not required to be a certified Installer to construct a pit privy but it must be constructed according to the On-site Sewage Disposal Systems Standard. If the building is to be serviced by a pit privy and has running water, a seperate system must be constructed to treat the grey water.
