Installing a Septic System

There are several steps involved in installing a new or replacement on-site sewage system:

A Qualified Person or Professional Engineer must perform a lot assessment on the property; select or design the appropriate system for the property and obtain a Notification Receipt or Approval number fron Nova Scotia Environment. The assessment will include an evaluation of the soils and take into account any confining features of the lot - including property boundaries, watercourses and wells.

Once the Notification or Approval number has been issued, a certified Installer may begin to install the sytem after providing NSE with a 24 hour Construction Alert.

The QP or P.Eng will perform an inspection(s) as the system is being installed and after the work has been completed. NSE Inspectors may also perform an audit on the system.

Once the system has been properly installed, a Certificate of Installation will the be issued.
